Call for volunteers for Yeadon Tarn straw baling

by colincampbell on 15 September, 2016

Councillors Ryk Downes and Colin Campbell (Lib Dem, Otley and Yeadon) hope to again join volunteers down at Yeadon Tarn to carry on the work that controls the harmful blue/green algae in the water, and are looking for more people to help fix the barley straw bales with them on Wednesday 21st September.

Four years ago the algae infestation became so bad it led to a ban on people accessing the tarn.  The solution is the placement of barley straw bales in the lake twice a year which combats the algae which has so far stopped it from returning to contaminate the tarn.

The autumn barley straw change will be taking place next Wednesday, 21st September, starting at 9am.  Cllrs Downes and Campbell have asked for more volunteers to come support the community work that is becoming a tradition in Yeadon.

Cllr Downes (Lib Dem, Otley and Yeadon) said:

The tarn is a beautiful part of Yeadon and one of the busiest parks in Leeds.  It is important that we do everything we can to keep it open for the public.  Blue Green algae is toxic but the natural remedy provided by barley straw means that we can keep it at bay and keep the tarn open.”

Cllr Campbell (Lib Dem, Otley and Yeadon) added:

“It is always a good day, working hard but accomplishing much to help keep the park open for everyone.  It’s easy to learn and you don’t need any experience, there are knowledgeable people on hand to show you exactly how to do it.  It is a great example of the Yeadon community spirit, and I look forward to it every year.  I hope to see many faces there again next Wednesday, both old and new.”
